    • Alfred A. "Al" DeCap, 87, of Hillsdale, died Thursday, July 10, 2014, at home.

      Visitation will be at Gibson-Bode Funeral Home Port Byron on Tuesday, July 15 from 3-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 2:30 p.m. Funeral services will held on Wednesday, July 16, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, Rapids City, with burial immediately following at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. John's Catholic Church, the Riverdale Education Foundation or the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.

      Mr. DeCap was born June 18, 1927 in Erie, the son of Morris and Goldie Wychkus DeCap. He married Joan VanHecke on Oct. 10, 1953, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline.

      Al farmed in the Hillsdale area, retiring in 1992. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a radio operator.

      Al served in many positions on a number of local government boards to include: Rock Island County Board – 10 years, Rock Island County Township Officials, Coe Township Supervisor, Coe Township Precinct Committeeman, Rock Island County Council oon Addictions, Vice-Chair Rock Island County Township Officials and Vice-Chair Rock Island County Democratic Central Committee. He also served as a member of the Riverdale Board of Education for 10 years, the Antique Engine & Tractor Association, the Western Farm Business Association and was a founding member of the Rock Island County Extension and 4-H Education Foundation. He was a trustee on the Rock Island Regional Office of Education Board of Trustees, a member of the USDA State Agriculture Committee and a member of the Coe-Lamb American Legion Post 0421.

      Survivors include his wife; children, Sue (Howard) Ickes, East Moline, John (Cheryl) DeCap, Hillsdale, Julie (Doug) Wagner, Midland, Ga., son-in-law, Doug Davis, Davenport; grandchildren, Rebecca Ickes, Jessica Mulder, Tony DeCap, Adam DeCap, Meghan Peterson, Katy Nahra, Emily
      Wagner and Luke Wagner; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie (LaVerne) Jacobs, Erie; brother, Jim (Pat) DeCap, Geneseo. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Davis, on Feb. 22, 2014. and a granddaughter, Michele Ickes.

      Al always said "If I made somebody laugh today – it was a good day!"
